Subjects Taught

I have attended Mercer University, Georgia College and State University, Georgia Southwestern, and Columbus University. I have earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Middle Grades Education, a Master’s of Science for Middle Grades Education in Science and Language Arts, and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. Additionally, I have earned Endorsements as a Reading Specialist, Teacher Support Specialist, Instructional Coach, and ESOL Specialist. I also have extensive State training as a Graduation Coach/Achievement Specialist and training for EL instruction.

I have been teaching over 20 years. Prior to teaching in Houston County School System, I taught as a Professional Development Instructor for the University of Georgia Early Childhood Institute. I have edited for various publication companies and proposed dissertations. I have taught science, language arts, social studies, reading, ESOL collaborative for multiple grade levels and subjects, numerous in-system professional development courses, Summer Enhancement, and various after school tutoring programs at Pearl Stephens Elementary, Bert Rumble Middle, and Huntington Middle. I was the Graduation Coach/Achievement Specialist for HMS for three years. I serve on numerous committees within the county and state and am a member of professional organizations that allow me to keep my instruction fresh and relevant for today's student. I am continually taking classes, attending workshops, or participating in webinars to polish my craft, stay abreast of current teaching trends, and maintaining effective and relative teaching strategies for my students. My Class Creed, which I wrote in  1994, is now recited as the School Creed each day after the Pledge of Allegiance.

I am a life-long learner. I believe learning is a daily process and so I participate in numerous activities to expand my horizons, broaden my experiences, and build my memories. I am an avid scuba diver, kayaker, backpacker, hiker, biker, and granny! I enjoy reading, writing, fishing, gardening, painting and cooking, particularly over open fires.  Interesting facts about me - I have swum with an alligator (not by choice) and a 14 foot hammerhead shark (yes, by choice) and was bitten by a copperhead (we both lived). I have biked across the Arizona desert and visited the Biosphere 2, I hiked Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica when it erupted in 2010, and I climbed a portion of "The Bluff" on Cayman Brac. I have taken flying lessons but actually chickened out of flying solo. (It’s a mother thing!) I taught fencing (that’s with swords) for 8 years. I have backpacked segments of the Appalachian Trail and other mountainous regions of Georgia and explored numerous deep caves. I am a dedicated fan of Star Wars, Marvel Comics, and Dr. Who. My favorite books are the Bible, The Three Musketeers, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. My favorite past time is to camp and kayak with my children and grandchildren, August and Layla, whom I love and adore, and meditating in God's wonderful creation. Finally, I am passionate about your child’s education, and I want to pass on my love for learning and adventure to your child. My love for the outdoors and my desire to share outdoor skills and experiences with  young people has inspired me to form HMS's first ever Hiking Hawks Club. Please check out the Hiking Hawks webpage under  "Campus Life - Clubs." I truly believe LIFE IS MEANT TO BE LIVED.
